1,004. What is Honor?
143:2 What is the deference one must show his parents? One may not stand in their designated places nor sit in their designated seats. One may not contradict them, nor corroborate their words in their presence, not even by saying, "My father's opinion makes sense." To what extent must we show them such deference? If the son was wearing fine clothes and sitting at the head of an important gathering, and his father or mother came in, tore his clothes, hit him in the head and spat in his face, he may not insult them, be upset in their presence, or demonstrate any anger towards them. Rather, he must remain silent and restrain himself out of awe for G-d, Who has commanded us thus. One may, however, take them to court for any monetary damages they may have caused.
143:3 What is the honor we must show our parents? One must provide them with food, drink, and garments, and he must bring them in and take them out. One must provide for them with a cheerful attitude. Even if one fed them delicacies every day, if he did so with a bad attitude, he will be punished for it.
