3,076. How Far to Plant From a Vineyard

Hilchos Kilayim 6:16

If someone ties one end of a rope or an elastic to a branch and the other end to a tree, he may plant seeds under the rope. If he extended the rope intending that the tree’s branches and leaves should grow on it, then it’s like a trellis and one may not plant under it.

Hilchos Kilayim 7:1

If someone comes to plant seeds next to a vineyard, he must distance four cubits (about six feet) from the roots of the vines to plant. If there’s just one vine, he must distance six handbreadths (about 18”) away to plant. If there’s a row of vines each adjacent to the next, then even if there are 100 such vines, it’s not treated as a vineyard. Rather, it’s treated as a single vine and one must only distance six handbreadths from the row in order to plant. If there are two such rows, one must distance four cubits in every direction, after which he may plant.
