2,582. A Hole in the Skull

Hilchos Shechita 10:4

If a bird’s hip is dislocated, it’s a treifa. If its wing is dislocated, we are concerned that it might have punctured its lung, so we examine it, after which it may be eaten. If an animal’s front leg is dislocated, it remains permitted and we are unconcerned.

Hilchos Shechita 10:5

If part of a domesticated or wild animal’s skull the size of a sela (a denomination of coin) is removed, the animal’s a treifa even if the membrane isn’t punctured. If a skull is punctured by multiple small holes, they combine to form the size of a sela.
