2,581. A Dislocated Hip

Hilchos Shechita 10:2

If six ribs are broken on each side, the animal’s only a treifa when they’re large ribs that contain marrow. If such is not the case, then the animal remains permitted even if they’re most of the animal's ribs and they’re closer to the spine. Similarly, if most of the ribs were removed, the animal’s a treifa. In fact, an animal is a treifa even if only one rib has been removed along with half of its vertebra. Similarly, if just one vertebra is removed from the spine, the animal’s a treifa even if it’s a vertebra from where there aren’t any ribs.

Hilchos Shechita 10:3

Regarding an animal’s thigh that has been dislocated from its socket, if its sinews – meaning the small projections from the bones of the socket that reach towards the bone that goes into the socket and grasp it – have deteriorated, then the animal’s a treifa. If such is not the case, then the animal remains permitted.
