2,573. Skinned and "Fallen"
Hilchos Shechita 9:7
If an animal was completely skinned, either by hand or as the result of an illness, it’s a treifa. If skin the width of a sela remained down the whole spine, on the umbilicus and on the tips of the limbs, then the animal is permitted. If skin the width of a sela was removed down the whole spine, from the umbilicus or from the tips of the limbs while the rest of the skin remained intact, it is a case of doubt but the Rambam opines that such an animal should be permitted.
Hilchos Shechita 9:8
“Fallen” is when an animal has fallen from a place at least ten handbreadths high (approximately 30”), crushing one of its organs. Such an animal is a treifa. The organ in question must be crushed to the extent that the animal’s shape and appearance are ruined. This animal is a treifa even if the organ isn’t punctured or broken. Similarly, if one struck the animal with a rock or a staff, crushing one of its organs, it’s a treifa. We are referring to the organs in an animal’s body cavity.
