2,497. Where One May Slaughter
Hilchos Shechita 1:29
If someone slaughters unwittingly on Yom Kippur or Shabbos, the slaughter is valid even though doing so wittingly would be a capital offense, or liable to lashes on Yom Kippur.
Hilchos Shechita 2:1
One is permitted to slaughter an animal anywhere except the Temple courtyard because only sanctified animals may be sacrificed in the courtyard; regular animals, whether domesticated, wild or birds, may not. Along these lines, Deuteronomy 12:21 tells us regarding the meat that we desire, “When the place that Hashem shall designate is far from you... you shall slaughter from your cattle and your sheep... and eat within your gates.” We see that the meat that we choose to eat is only slaughtered outside of the place that Hashem will designate, i.e., the Temple.
