649. Gifts on Shabbos

90:8 If a person hires a worker to guard some object, the worker may not accept daily wages for working on Shabbos itself. However, if the worker was hired for a week or a month, he may accept his wages for Shabbos as part of the total. (Hiring a person for a month at a certain daily rate would be considered daily wages - Rema 306:4.) 90:9 One person may not give another a gift on Shabbos unless it’s something actually needed for Shabbos. Similarly, it is forbidden to give someone collateral for a loan on Shabbos unless it's something needed for Shabbos or to perform a mitzvah. In these cases, one should not say, "Here's the collateral." Rather, he should just give it to the other party.
