Exodus 20:3
לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים עַל-פָּנָי
You shall have no other “gods” in My presence.
The word for false “gods” in this verse is “elohim,” the same as is used for G-d Himself. The form of this word is plural in Hebrew but singular in Aramaic, to preclude people from reaching the very wrong conclusion that other “gods” may actually exist. Accordingly, Onkelos translates this verse as the more direct “You shall have no other ‘god’ except for Me.”
