Nehemiah 8:15
וַאֲשֶׁר יַשְׁמִיעוּ וְיַעֲבִירוּ קוֹל בְּכָל עָרֵיהֶם וּבִירוּשָׁלִַם לֵאמֹר צְאוּ הָהָר וְהָבִיאוּ עֲלֵי זַיִת וַעֲלֵי עֵץ שֶׁמֶן וַעֲלֵי הֲדַס וַעֲלֵי תְמָרִים וַעֲלֵי עֵץ עָבֹת לַעֲשֹׂת סֻכֹּת כַּכָּתוּב
They should publicize and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem saying, “Go out to the mountain and get olive branches, wild olive branches, myrtle branches, palm branches and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as is written.”
Upon returning to Israel after the first exile, the leaders resolved to celebrate a Succos the likes of which hadn’t been seen in generations. The ibn Ezra clarifies that the people were not instructed to gather all these types of branches, just some of them. He gives the example of “the one who curses his father and his mother” (Leviticus 20:9). One need not curse both of them to be culpable; either one will do! Similarly here, the people were instructed to gather whatever wood was needed, not necessarily all these species.
