R. Ovadia Yosef on Confusing Language About Dividing a Gift (16 Adar Sheni)
שו"ת יביע אומר חושן משפט ח:ה 16 Adar Sheni 5733 (1973)
Language is how we communicate, but it's not always as clear as we need. When we speak of distributing multiple items among multiple people, do we mean that many to each person, or divided among them all? R. Yosef takes many examples - reminding us of more than a few interesting areas of halacha - and discusses whether the language of Tanach differs from that of Chazal, or from ours.
