758. Transporting Makeup and Other Materials

Shabbos 18:10

If someone transports eye makeup, either for medicinal use or for cosmetic purposes, the volume that renders one liable is enough to paint one eye. In a place where a woman wouldn’t paint just one eye for a cosmetic purposes, one who transports eye makeup for cosmetic reasons would not be liable for less than the volume needed to paint two eyes. The volume of tar or sulfur is enough to seal a hole and pierce the seal for use as a dropper. The volume of wax is enough to seal a small hole. The volume of glue is enough to place on a board in order to trap birds. The volume of fat is enough to grease the size of a sela (a certain denomination of coin) under a baking cake.

The volume of earth that renders one liable for transporting is enough to seal a letter. The volume of clay is enough to put on the hole of a crucible. The volume of manure or fine sand is enough to fertilize a leek; of coarse sand, enough to mix with a trowel of lime (the mineral). The volume of brick debris is enough for the hole of a goldsmith's crucible; the volume of hair is enough to mix with clay for the hole of a goldsmith's crucible. The volume of lime (again, the mineral) is enough to apply to a girl's smallest finger. (Lime used to be applied topically to young girls for cosmetic purposes.) The volume of dust or ashes is enough to cover the blood of a small bird. A stone renders one liable if an animal could feel it if the stone were thrown at it; this is a weight of ten zuz (about 0.37 lbs.). The liable volume of a shard is enough to hold a reviis of liquid (about 3 ounces).
