614. Using the Light of Shabbos Candles

Shabbos 5:2

One is permitted to use of the light of Shabbos candles so long as that the thing he’s using it for does not require particular scrutiny. If something must be looked at very precisely, one may not use the Shabbos lights because he may come to tilt the lamp in order to improve the flame’s brightness.

Shabbos 5:3

Shabbos lights must be kindled while it is still day, before sunset. Women have a greater obligation in this matter than men because they are at home more and are more involved in household matters. Nevertheless, men should alert them to the matter and make sure that candles have been lit. A man should tell the members of his household on Friday afternoon before sunset to light the candles. If it is unclear whether or not night has fallen and Shabbos has started, the lights may no longer be lit.
