338. Public Stipulations

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 11:18

Similarly, if the community officers publicly stipulated that any surplus funds from the sale of a shul could be used for mundane things, then they may be used for these things. Therefore, after building the new shul, or buying an aron, a mantle, chumashim, or a sefer Torah, the surplus funds may be used for whatever mundane causes they desire as per this condition.

Similarly, if all or most of a city’s residents accept a particular person’s authority, then whatever he does vis-à-vis the sale of the shul is binding. He may sell it or even give it away as he sees fit, based upon whatever conditions he may set.
