#428: Small Activities

1. The prohibition of hachanah does not include simple, ordinary actions that a person does normally but also help to prepare for after Shabbat. For example, one who finishes reading a book or learning a sefer is permitted to put it back in its regular place. Similarly, one may return foods or dishes back to their regular spots in the refrigerator or pantry, even if they will not be used until after Shabbat (see Peninei Halacha 22:16). For the same reason, one may put dirty clothes in a laundry basket if that is where they are normally placed after being worn.

2. To prevent significant difficulty or exertion, one may bring an object on Shabbat to another location to use after Shabbat, provided it is earlier than the last few minutes of Shabbat. That way, it is not immediately obvious that one is acting in preparation for after Shabbat and one could theoretically use it on Shabbat itself. For example, one may bring wine for havdalah to a location that will be difficult to get wine later, even if it is still Shabbat afternoon. Similarly, one may bring a sweater along on Shabbat afternoon even if one will only need it after Shabbat (Mishnah Berurah 667:5; Peninei Halacha 22:16).
