#417: Seeing Suspicious Activity
1. If one sees suspicious movement or people on Shabbat and is concerned they may be terrorists or intending to harm others, it is permitted, and obligatory, to call the police immediately or do anything else needed to protect people’s safety. This includes using one’s phone, carrying a weapon if needed, or anything else.
2. The same is true if one finds a “cheifetz chashud,” a suspicious item – one should alert the police immediately, even if one needs to violate Shabbat. Those who feel the need to carry a phone or weapon on them on a regular basis on Shabbat for security reasons should consult with their local halachic authority for specific guidance.
