#409: Uvda D’Chol
1. We mentioned yesterday that exercising may be forbidden on Shabbat as a type of therapeutic medical treatment. In addition, exercise may also be forbidden for a different reason, namely, “uvda d’chol” (similarity to a weekday activity) (see Mishnah Berurah 328:136). It also may constitute ziluta d’Shabbat, an improper degradation of the holiness of Shabbat (Orchot Shabbat, ch.20). A minority opinion is not concerned with this issue and forbids exercise only when done for the purpose of perspiring, as discussed yesterday (Ohr L’tzion 2:36).
2. Even if one is not exercising specifically, one should not run on Shabbat. The reason is that one’s walking on Shabbat should not be the same as one’s walking during the week, and running is often affiliated with rushing to places during the week. (Shulchan Aruch 301:1; Mishnah Berurah 301:1)
