#388: Examples of Lifesaving vs. Supplementary Actions

1. We mentioned yesterday that according to most opinions, it is best to ask an adult Jew to perform live-saving procedures on Shabbat. For example, if there is a choice between a Jew and non-Jew driving a patient to the hospital, it would be permitted and preferable for the Jew to drive (if all other considerations are equal). We also mentioned that a shinui should be used if possible. For example, if one must carry in an area without an eruv, it is best to do so while carrying in an unusual manner. However, if one must drive, one should drive normally since it may be dangerous to drive with a shinui (we will discuss more details about driving on Shabbat in upcoming topics concerning giving birth on Shabbat).

2. We mentioned yesterday that a non-Jew should be asked to perform actions that are not critical for saving a life but done for comfort. For example, if turning on a light is helpful for the patient’s care but not necessary, it is preferable to ask a non-Jew to do so.
