#381: Expounding on Conditions of Pikuach Nefesh
1. Yesterday, we continued discussing various examples of medical conditions that are considered life-threatening and warrant violating Shabbat. All of the allowances in these cases for pikuach nefesh apply even to an individual who, according to medical assessment, will clearly only live for a very short time, even a few hours or minutes.
2. In addition, Shabbat is violated to save a life in all these cases even if the person is unconscious and will be unable to perform mitzvot any more (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 329:4; Biur Halachah). This is because saving a life is not dependent on the ability to perform mitzvot, but rather the notion that the Torah supports maintaining life (vachai bahem) at all costs, and not ending it (with the exception of the three cardinal sins).
