#378: More Examples of Pikuach Nefesh Situations
1. We mentioned yesterday that certain types of illnesses or medical situations are automatically considered to be life-threatening according to halacha. Another example is a wound caused by a metal implement (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 328:7). According to the Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah (32:11), today we assume this applies to a deep wound or cut caused by a knife, or a powerful wound caused by metal (or other heavy object, such as a stone). The same rules apply to a deep wound that has become dirty with earth or anything else that can cause infection or danger if not properly treated.
2. Heatstroke, sunstroke, or serious burns are also grounds for violating Shabbat, especially if it is in a sensitive place on the body (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 32:10). In addition, someone who is sensitive to the sting of a bee, hornet, or the like that is stung may also be assumed to be in danger. Snake and scorpion bites are also assumed to be in this category (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 32:12).
