#375: Overriding Shabbat Without Hesitation
1. Yesterday, we began discussing the rules for saving a life on Shabbat and noted that one must override Shabbat to save the life of a person possibly in danger. Even if the patient is reluctant to have Shabbat violated on his behalf, if it is determined that the case is one of danger to his life, Shabbat must be violated even against his will (Mishnah Berurah 328:6). Even if one’s effort and overriding Shabbat to save a life turns out to be unnecessary, one certainly is not punished for his effort, but rather is still rewarded for it (Tractate Menachot 64a; Shulchan Aruch 328:15).
2. A rabbi should make sure to tell his congregants clearly that they should not hesitate in cases of potential danger and not wait to consult if there is no time, but immediately to act (Mishnah Berurah 328:6).
