#363: Employing a Shinui
1. If a choleh she’ein bo sakanah must apply a medicated patch or suppository, it can often be done before Shabbat. If it must be done on Shabbat, it may be done with a shinui, such as holding it between the back of the fingers, close to the knuckle, and inserting it backhanded (“Halachos of Refuah on Shabbos,” p.61).
2. A choleh she’ein bo sakanah, such as one suffering from severe constipation to the extent that it affects his entire body, may take an enema on Shabbat using a shinui, such as holding the bottle between one’s fingers, close to the knuckle, and inserting it back-handed (Ibid., p.63). Similarly, a choleh she’ein bo sakanah who is incapacitated due to a muscle ache or suffering from fever may take a bath with cold water or lukewarm water if this helps the condition. If the person wishes to use hot water (hotter than the temperature of yad soledet bo, approximately 110 degrees Fahrenheit), it may be prepared before Shabbat (Ibid.).
