#361: Dissolving Pills into Water and Sleeping Pills

1. In cases where taking a pill on Shabbat is permitted, one may also crumble it and dissolve it into water if needed, provided one does not put in only a small amount of water, such that the mixture becomes a thicker solution with the texture of batter (due to concerns for losh). (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 33:4)

2. Many poskim permit taking sleeping pills on Shabbat for those who suffer greatly from lack of sleep, such as insomnia. This is because such a person may have a status of a choleh she’ein bo sakanah, if they cannot function properly as a result (Tzitz Eliezer 9:17; Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 33:16).
