All communal offerings are of male animals. All communal sin offerings are of goats or cattle, but not of sheep. All communal burnt offerings are of sheep or cattle, but not of goats. All private sin offerings are female, are eaten by the kohanim, and are not brought from cattle. Only three sin offerings deviate: that of a leader (nasi), which is a goat and is eaten; that of an anointed kohein, which is a bull and is burned – this is called “the bull brought for any mitzvah”; and the bull offered by the Kohein Gadol on Yom Kippur, which is burned.

All communal sin offerings are eaten with the following exceptions: the goat offered on Yom Kippur corresponding to the goat sent “to azazel,” the goats for acting on errors in matters of idolatry; and the bull brought for acting on erroneous rulings of the court. The bull brought for any mitzvah and the bull brought for acting on erroneous rulings of the court are called “bulls that are burned.” The goats brought for acting on errors in matters of idolatry are called “goats that are burned.” We see that a total of five sin offerings are burned, two of which are private and three of which are communal.
