#354: Mental Illness as a Form of Choleh She'ein Bo Sakanah

1. Last week, we offered some examples of which illnesses would qualify as a choleh she’ein bo sakanah. In addition to those cases, according to many poskim, certain cases of mental illness also qualify. This would include schizotypal personality disorder, certain cases of bipolar type 2, certain cases of autism, and many cases of depression. The reason is that these mental illnesses significantly affect a person’s ability to function normally (R. Yonatan Rosensweig, Nafshi B’sheelati, the Halakhot of Mental Health, ch.2, 11, 13, and ch.7, 11)

2. In any of these cases or similar ones, it is permitted to take medicine, such as pills. However, if it is possible to take them before or after Shabbat (e.g., Friday afternoon or Motzai Shabbat), that is preferable.
