#340: Spices
1. It is permitted to mix sugar, spices, or cocoa powder into cottage cheese or the like on Shabbat, since this does not constitute forming a mixture, but rather enhancing the taste and preparing it for eating (R. Yosef Zvi Rimon, “Shabbat,” p. 759).
2. It is permitted to add sauce or liquid to rice or couscous on Shabbat since the rice or couscous does not usually become unified together as a thick mixture in the process (Ibid.). However, one may not mix it in a manner that the sauce and rice would become one large mass, as that would constitute a thick mixture and the regular rules concerning thick mixtures would apply, as have been discussed previously.
