#331: Egg Salad
1. Making egg salad with oil as the binder is problematic because oil is a liquid and the resulting food is often defined as a thick mixture. As we have learned previously, according to many opinions, there is no halachically permitted manner to pour a liquid when making a thick mixture on Shabbat, so making egg salad may be permitted only in cases when absolutely necessary.
2. The most ideal methods of preparing egg salad would be to either make it before Shabbat (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 8:28), or not chop it up so finely so that there are distinct pieces of egg that do not become one unit (The 39 Melochos, p.543). Nevertheless, it is common to make egg salad normally on Shabbat, and some poskim do permit it for a variety of reasons (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah, ibid.). It is preferable, however, that if one needs to prepare it on Shabbat, to at least make egg salad with a shinui in the order of pouring and the method of mixing (ibid.).
