#329: Machshavah
The sefer “HaShir V’hashevach” (written by the Chassidic rebbe of Porisov, available on Otzar Hachochma, which has machshavah ideas about Shabbat) writes that during the week, we must work on ourselves spiritually and daven to Hashem to enable us to achieve all of the holiness of Shabbat. He explains that according to the Arizal, the weekday is a time of “Berurim,” where we are instructed to separate the good from the bad, but on Shabbat there are no “Berurim,” since everything, including the food, contains holiness. Thus, he writes that one who sings Zemirot, eats the Shabbat seudot in the right way, and conducts himself properly on Shabbat can attain great spiritual heights – but one must prepare for this and daven for it during the week.
In addition, we can add that certainly observing the negative aspects of Shabbat, the prohibitions, certainly also contribute to this state. Everything about Shabbat contains holiness – but only if we restrict ourselves on Shabbat to permitted activities, and are familiar with the rules of what is and is not allowed. May we all merit to properly prepare for Shabbat during the week and achieve these great heights on Shabbat itself.
