4,017. Three Types of Blemishes
Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 6:4
Examples of permanent blemishes include a broken leg and a broken arm; examples of temporary blemishes include patches of dry or moist skin. The list of blemishes given in the Torah is not exhaustive; any blemish visible on the body disqualifies a kohein, as per Leviticus 21:18, 21: “Anyone who has a blemish,” i.e., of any kind. The blemishes mentioned in the Torah are for illustrative purposes.
Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 6:5
There are three categories of blemishes: those that disqualify a kohein from serving and an animal from being brought as an offering; those that only disqualify a kohein from serving; those that do not inherently disqualify a kohein from serving but regarding which the Sages said a kohein may not serve for appearances’ sake. [These will be addressed IY”H in halacha 8:17.]
