#302: Mixtures of a Solid and Liquid

1. We learned previously that many poskim hold that a solid mixed into a liquid is considered a halachic mixture and subject to borer (though we said some disagreed). According to this approach, one who wishes to remove a piece of solid waste or a fly that fell into a liquid must take a small amount of the liquid together with the solid.

2. The Chazon Ish is more stringent and requires removing all of the liquid that surrounds the solid in order to permit borer in this case. However, most contemporary poskim rule in accordance with the former opinion, which is accepted by the Mishna Berura.

3. According to many poskim, the entire discussion refers to small solids mixed into a liquid, but large pieces of solid found in a liquid would not constitute a mixture (Shevitat HaShabbat, Orchot Shabbat, The 39 Melachos, and many others). Therefore, there is no problem of borer when removing a large piece of chicken that one does not want from a pot of soup or large pickles from brine even if one does not want them for immediate use.
