#300: Defining a Mixture for Borer - Foods With Peels
1. Many poskim hold that a food with a peel/skin is considered a mixture (Rama 321:19, Biur Halacha), which is the more accepted opinion for Ashkenazim, though some hold that it is not considered a mixture (Aruch Hashulchan, Chazon Ovadia, borer n.11). All agree that one may peel a food on Shabbat to get to the inside since there is no other way to eat it, but the majority/strict opinion holds that one must adhere to the other borer conditions of “Miyad” and “Biyad” while the lenient opinion holds that one can peel for later or with a utensil (see sources quoted above).
2. Based on the above, one may peel the skin off chicken or fish or peel an orange/other fruit with intent to eat the food right after and without using a utensil according to all opinions, while the lenient opinion allows peeling in any way desired. We will discuss using a peeler and peeling vegetables that could be eaten without peeling in the next few posts.
