Melava Malka - Source
QUESTION: What is the source for eating Melava Malka?
ANSWER: The Gemara (Shabbos 119b) states in the name of Rebbi Chanina: “One should always set their table on Motzaei Shabbos, even if he can only eat a kezayis.” Rashi explains that the purpose of this meal is to escort the Shabbos as it leaves, the way one would escort a king who is departing from a city. Therefore, it is proper to eat Melava Malka soon after Shabbos, but if one is not hungry and postpones eating Melava Malka, it should not be pushed off past midnight. Poskim write that one should formally set the table with a tablecloth to show respect. Some have the custom to light candles, and it is appropriate to sing piyyutim and zemiros (see Mishnah Berurah 300:2-3). The Tur (299) adds that there is a custom on Motzaei Shabbos to recite verses that mention Eliyahu Hanavi. Seforim say that one who does so will have success in Torah and other endeavors in the coming week. The custom is to do this during the Melava Malka.
