3,924. The Kohein Anointed to Address the Army
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 4:21
The office of kohein anointed to address the army is not inherited; one’s son is like all other kohanim in this regard. If the office holder’s son happens to succeed him, fine; if not, then not. When the kohein anointed to address the army serves in the Temple, he wears the standard four garments of a regular kohein. One may be promoted to a higher position but not demoted to a lower position because we should always ascend in matters of holiness. One may not be removed from a position of communal authority unless he committed some offense.
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 4:22
If a Kohein Gadol violates a prohibition that incurs the penalty of lashes, he is lashed in a court of three judges, the same as anyone else. He then resumes his exalted status.
