#289: The Condition of "Biyad" - Using the Lid of a Pot or an Apple Corer

1. According to many poskim, one may not use the lid of a pot to allow liquid, such as soup, to be poured into a bowl and prevent solid foods in the soup from being poured. The same is true for straining noodles from water. This is because the lid functions as a sorting utensil and is forbidden rabbinically (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah; “The 39 Melachos,” R. Shimon Eider, citing R. Moshe Feinstein).

2. One may not use an apple corer to remove the core from an apple for similar reasons. Poskim dispute if this is permitted when part of the apple that is edible remains on the core. We will discuss the status of a peeler separately, as well as the subject of removing part of the food with the waste).
