#243: Practical Applications of Dosh

1. Peeling most other fruits or vegetables with peels or shells, such as oranges, bananas, peanuts, and garlic is permitted either because:

a. Dosh does not apply to thin peels that are closely attached to the fruit or vegetable (Pri Megadim, Eishel Avraham 319:8).

b. Dosh does not apply to peels or shells that remain until the time of eating (Igrot Moshe, O.C. 1:25; The 39 Melochos, p.322).

Nearly all fruits, vegetables, and nuts are included in at least one of these two categories.

2. Peeling fruits and vegetables may still violate the melachah of borer (separating). We will discuss in future posts how to avoid borer when peeling fruits and vegetables.
