#240: Location of Produce Being Gathered

1. The melachah of me’amer generally applies only to items gathered in their place of growth, such as fruits on the ground near the tree on which they grew (Mishnah Berurah 340:35). Therefore, one may string together most types of fruit inside one’s home except figs, which were normally strung indoors (Shulchan Aruch 320:10; Mishnah Berurah 340:38).

2. Chazal forbade gathering any items that grow from the ground that are scattered over a large area, since this involves an inordinate amount of effort (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 335:5). Some poskim maintain that the prohibition of gathering produce applies even indoors (Chayei Adam 13:1; Orchot Shabbat 18:85), while others hold that it applies only when the items are scattered outside (Ohr L’tzion; Mishnah Berurah 340:37).
