3,896. How the Kohein Gadol and King Were Anointed
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 1:8
Because there was no anointing oil in the Second Temple, the Kohein Gadol was installed simply by donning the uniform of the Kohein Gadol.
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 1:9
The Kohein Gadol was anointed by pouring the oil on his head and applying it between his eyes in the shape of the Greek letter chi, which is like an X, as per Leviticus 8:12: “He poured the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to sanctify him.” The kings of the Davidic dynasty were anointed by spreading the oil on their foreheads in the shape of a crown. They may not be anointed anywhere else on their bodies, and we may not use too much oil.
