The morning routine described in the preceding halacha was followed every night except for Shabbos, on which they didn’t carry torches. Instead, they checked by the light of the lamps that were lit before Shabbos.

There is a Torah obligation to prepare the anointing oil in order to have it ready for things that would require anointing. Exodus 30:25 teaches: “You shall make it holy anointing oil.”
