#189: The Berachah of Hamavdil
1. After reciting the berachah on the fire, the one reciting Havdalah recites the final berachah of “Hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol.” Just as the other parts of Havdalah, one should listen carefully to the berachah and recite “Amen” after it is concluded. One who did not hear the berachah of “Hamavdil” has not fulfilled their obligation (Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 60:30).
2. One should not speak after Havdalah until the one who recites Havdalah has drunk at least a cheekful of wine or grape juice and thereby fulfilled the mitzvah. Ideally, the one reciting Havdalah should drink at least a revi’it (86 ml) so that that the berachah acharonah of “Al Hagafen” can be recited without any question. One who drinks more than a cheekful but less than a revi’it does not recite a berachah acharonah due to uncertainty (Mishnah Berurah 296:6; Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 60:35).
