3,797. The Three Indispensable Rules of Yoveil

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 10:13

Three things are indispensable vis-à-vis yoveil: blowing shofar, releasing servants and returning fields to their owners. The latter is called “the release of the land.”

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 10:14

From Rosh Hashana through Yom Kippur, servants would not be released to go home, nor would they be under their masters’ control, nor would fields return to their owners. Rather, the servants would eat, drink and rejoice, and crowns would be placed on their heads. When Yom Kippur came and the shofar was blown in the court, the servants were released to go home and the fields were returned to their owners.
