3,704. Burying Produce During Shemittah
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 1:14
If someone violates the law and removes thorns or stones from his field during shemittah in order to improve it for the following year, he is not penalized. He is permitted to plant in that field the following year.
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 1:15
Let’s say that someone buries produce like turnips, radishes, etc. during shemittah. If some of the leaves are visible, there’s no concern; if not, then it’s prohibited. If he buries produce like wild onions, etc., he must put at least four kav* in the height of a handbreadth** with a handbreadth of soil on top of them. He must bury them where people walk so that they don’t grow. One may tear the stalks off of rice during shemittah, but one may not cut them.
*Four kav = about 3.75 gallons
**One handbreadth = about three inches
