3,693. Converting Before or After His Donkey Gives Birth

Hilchos Bikkurim 12:16

Let’s say that someone converts to Judaism, but we don’t know whether his donkey gave birth before or after his conversion. In such a case, he must redeem or decapitate the offspring. If he redeems it with a sheep, the sheep belongs to the convert. This is because of the principle that the burden of proof is on the one who wants to take property from another (i.e., the kohein must prove that the conversion took place before the donkey was born).

Hilchos Bikkurim 12:17

If a non-Jew puts aside a firstborn donkey (for redemption), he should be told that he is not obligated to do so. He is allowed to use the donkey’s shearings and to work it without redemption.
