3,691. The Value of the Donkey

Hilchos Bikkurim 12:12

The previous halacha (about redeeming a firstborn donkey for its cash value) applies when the donkey is worth three zuz* or more. If it’s worth was less than three zuz, it may only be redeemed with a sheep or with three zuz. A generous person shouldn’t give less than a sela, a stingy person gives half a sela, and an average person gives three zuz.

Hilchos Bikkurim 12:13

If someone redeems a firstborn donkey that belongs to someone else, the redemption is effective and the donkey belongs to its owner (not to the one who redeemed it).
