1,176. Collecting the Loan

179:4 It's forbidden to press the borrower for payment when one knows that he cannot pay. It is even forbidden to pass by his house because he will be ashamed when he sees the lender and he cannot pay. Regarding this, Exodus 22:25 says "Do not treat him as a bill collector would."

179:5 Just as it is prohibited for the lender to pressure the borrower, the borrower is not allowed to withhold the lender's money when he has it, telling him "Go away and come back later." Regarding this, Proverbs 3:28 says, "Do not say to your neighbor, 'go away and come back....'"
