1,149. Self-Harm

169:2 The Torah says not to cut our flesh for the dead (i.e., in anguish - Leviticus 19:28) and it says not to scratch ourselves for the dead (Deuteronomy 14:1). Cutting and scratching are the same: they are both prohibited whether done in anguish for the dead or not. Even to hit oneself with one's own hand until he bleeds is prohibited, even if done for some anguish other than a death.

169:3 One may not pull hair from his head in grief over the dead; even a single hair is prohibited. Women are likewise prohibited from pulling out hair, and certainly they are prohibited to self-harm.
