1,145. Idols
168:1 Exodus 20:19 says, "Do not make 'gods' of silver with Me...," which the Sages understand as a warning not to draw an image of anything of the higher or lower realms. We may therefore not make images of the angels who serve before G-d, which includes the four faces of the chariot (Ezekiel chapter 1) or the likenesses of the Seraphim, the Ofanim and the ministering angels. One may likewise not draw the sun, the moon or the stars. One may not make them, even for an idolator and even if they are only two-dimensional, but one may keep a two-dimensional representation in his home. One may not instruct a non-Jew to make them for him because telling a non-Jew to do something one can't do oneself is prohibited in all matters, just like it is when it comes to performing acts of labor on Shabbos.
168:2 It is similarly prohibited to make an image of a human being; even a human face alone is prohibited. Even keeping such an image is prohibited unless one has slightly disfigured it. This applies to a full face with two eyes and a nose, but if it is only half a face in profile, it is not prohibited.
