#174: The Cup of Wine Used for Havdalah (Part 3)

  1. We learned previously that one should ideally fill up the cup used for Havdalah, like Kiddush, to the top. In addition to this, it is also customary specifically for Havdalah to fill it up enough that a small amount spills over. This is done to show Hashem that we wish to have overflowing blessings in our house and in our lives during the coming week (Rema, O.C. 296:1; Mishnah Berurah 296:5).
  2. Filling the cup to the top and causing it to spill are not critical aspects of Havdalah. One still fulfills the mitzvah if one does not have enough wine for these purposes, or if one does not fill the cup for any other reason.
