#172: The Cup of Wine Used for Havdalah (Part 1)

  1. Many of the halachot that we learned previously concerning the requirements of the cup used for Kiddush apply to Havdalah as well. When filling up the cup with wine, grape juice, or chamar medinah for Havdalah, one should make sure that the cup contains at least a revi’it of liquid. As we learned in previous posts concerning Kiddush, according to the basic halacha, this is equivalent to approximately 3.2 fluid ounces (R. Chaim Naeh), while some hold that a revi’it equals 5.1 fluid ounces (150 cc) (Chazon Ish).
  2. One should ideally fill up the cup to the top (Shulchan Aruch 271:10; Mishnah Berurah 42). If one does not have sufficient wine or grape juice for this purpose, one may add solid items, such as ice cubes or cubed sugar, to fill it to the top (Mishnah Berurah 182:32; Piskei Teshuvot 271, n. 204).
