1,132. Superstition
165:16 One may not enlist an idolator to serve as a child's teacher or professional mentor. All the more so, one may not enlist an apostate Jew to fill these roles, as we are afraid the child may emulate him.
166:1 The Torah commands us (Leviticus 19:26) not to use divination or to follow omens. Examples include deciding things on the basis of such events as "because my walking stick fell from my hand" or "a deer crossed my path," or saying "If I take that path, I will not be successful" or "Please dont ask for your money now because it's bad luck to repay a debt in the morning." Anyone who follows these and similar such superstitions violates a negative commandment. (The Kitzur Shulchan Aruch offers many more examples.)
