#162: Eating Before Havdalah (Part 1)
- One is not allowed to eat or drink anything before reciting Havdalah except for water (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 299:1). As we have discussed previously, one who began eating shalosh seudot with bread before sunset may continue after nightfall, even before reciting Havdalah (ibid.).
- One who mistakenly began eating before Havdalah should immediately stop and wait until Havdalah is recited. This is true even if it is after sunset but before nightfall, such that Havdalah may not be recited yet. One may then continue eating (Mishnah Berurah 299:3).
