1,130. Neglectful Teachers
165:12 If a teacher leaves his students and goes out, or if he does some work with them other than their studies, or if he is lazy in his job - in any of these cases, we apply the verse "Cursed is the one who does the work of G-d negligently" (Jeremiah 48:10). Therefore, one should only appoint a pious, efficient and diligent person as a teacher. The teacher should not stay up too late at night so that he won't be lethargic during the day when he has to teach. Also, he shouldn't fast or deprive himself of food and drink, nor should he eat and drink too much. All of these things cause a person not to be able to teach well. Any teacher who is hired and then deviates from these protocols is in breach of his agreement and should be removed from the position.
165:13 Even when it was considered acceptable for a teacher to physically discipline a student, he was not permitted to do so harshly or cruelly, with a rod or a whip. The teacher was only permitted to use a small strap.
